Pap Smear in Seoul for Foreigners
Regular cervical screening is one of the simplest ways to protect your health. Here is how foreigners in Seoul can book a Pap smear, what happens during the test and how results are explained in English.
Book a gynecology appointment, avoid your period, and allow about 15 minutes for the visit. A Pap smear (cervical cytology), often combined with an HPV test, is taken during a short pelvic exam. Results are usually ready within about a week and can be explained in English.
Who Should Get a Pap Smear?
Most international guidelines recommend regular cervical screening for women from their early twenties, with the interval depending on age, past results and whether HPV testing is included. If you are unsure when you were last screened, the doctor can help you decide.
Women enrolled in Korea's National Health Insurance may also be eligible for the national cervical cancer screening program, which covers a Pap smear at set intervals.
Pap Smear vs. HPV Test
| Test | What it checks | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pap smear (cytology) | Abnormal changes in cervical cells | Detects pre-cancerous changes early |
| HPV test | High-risk HPV types | Identifies who needs closer follow-up |
| Liquid-based cytology | Cell sample in liquid medium | Allows HPV testing from the same sample |
How to Prepare
- Schedule the test when you are not on your period.
- Avoid intercourse, vaginal creams or douching for 24–48 hours before the test.
- Bring your passport or ARC and any previous screening results.
- Tell the doctor if you are pregnant, have unusual bleeding or discharge.
What Happens During the Test
- Short consultation about your history and symptoms.
- You change in a private area and lie on the examination chair.
- The doctor gently inserts a speculum and collects cells from the cervix with a small brush.
- The whole procedure takes only a few minutes; mild pressure is normal.
- You can return to normal activities immediately.
Understanding Your Results
A normal result means no abnormal cells were found. An abnormal result does not mean cancer — most changes are mild and many resolve on their own. Depending on the findings, the doctor may recommend repeat testing, an HPV test or a colposcopy for a closer look.
