Genital Numbness — finding the cause of reduced sensation

Less feeling in the vulva or vagina can come from nerves, hormones, the pelvic floor, medications or stress. A careful check helps separate simple causes from ones that need urgent attention.

Quick answer

Genital numbness means reduced or altered feeling in the vulva, clitoris or vagina. It is often linked to nerve pressure (for example from long cycling), childbirth, low estrogen, some medications such as antidepressants, diabetes or anxiety. Sudden numbness with leg weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control is an emergency and needs immediate hospital care.

Common triggers
Cycling, childbirth, medications
Hormonal link
Low estrogen after menopause
Nerve involved
Often the pudendal nerve
First steps
History, exam, targeted tests
Urgent sign
Saddle numbness with bladder or bowel loss
Referral
Neurology or urology if needed

What causes genital numbness?

Cause group Examples Clues
Nerve pressure or injury Long cycling or sitting, pudendal nerve irritation, childbirth, pelvic surgery Tingling, pins and needles, worse with sitting
Hormonal change Menopause, breastfeeding, some contraceptives Dryness, thinner tissue, less arousal
Medications SSRIs/SNRIs, some blood pressure drugs, hormonal therapies Started or changed a medicine recently
Medical conditions Diabetes, multiple sclerosis, spinal problems, vitamin B12 deficiency Numbness elsewhere, other symptoms
Pelvic floor Weak or overly tense muscles Leakage, pain, or difficulty relaxing
Emotional factors Stress, anxiety, past trauma Sensation varies with situation

Sometimes more than one factor is involved, such as hormonal change plus a medication.

When is numbness an emergency?

Go to an emergency room immediately if you have sudden numbness of the genitals, buttocks or inner thighs (“saddle” area) together with back pain, leg weakness, or new difficulty controlling or passing urine or stool. These can be signs of cauda equina syndrome, which needs urgent spinal assessment.

Also seek prompt care for numbness after an injury or fall, numbness spreading to other parts of the body, or new weakness on one side.

How is it assessed at Yoonho?

  1. Consultation in English When it started, whether it is constant or only during sex, your births, surgeries, sports such as cycling, and all medications are reviewed.
  2. Gynecological examination The doctor looks for skin changes, signs of low estrogen or infection, and checks light-touch sensation and pelvic floor muscles, with your consent.
  3. Targeted tests Blood tests such as blood sugar, thyroid or vitamin B12, and hormone tests where relevant.
  4. Plan and referral Gynecological causes are treated at Yoonho. If a nerve or spinal cause is suspected, you are referred to neurology, urology or a pain specialist.

Read more about the pelvic exam if you feel unsure about the examination.

How is genital numbness treated?

  • Reduce nerve pressure — breaks from cycling, a pressure-relieving saddle, posture changes and cushions for long sitting.
  • Treat low estrogen — local vaginal estrogen or moisturizers when tissue has thinned; see vaginal atrophy.
  • Review medications — never stop a prescribed medicine on your own, but your prescribing doctor may adjust the dose or choice.
  • Pelvic floor therapy — strengthening or relaxation training to improve blood flow and muscle function.
  • Manage underlying conditions — such as diabetes or vitamin deficiency.
  • Counseling — when stress, anxiety or past experiences affect sensation.

Injection treatments such as PRP (O-Shot) are sometimes asked about, but there is little evidence for numbness and they are considered only after medical causes are addressed.

Living with reduced sensation

While causes are being treated, some practical steps can help: allow more time for arousal, use a water- or silicone-based lubricant, explore different types of stimulation, and talk openly with your partner. Pelvic floor exercises done correctly may improve awareness of the area over time. If reduced sensation affects orgasm, see our page on orgasm disorder.

Cost and insurance

Costs depend on the exam and tests needed. As a general guide, a consultation is about ₩50,000–100,000; tests are added only when they help the diagnosis. Residents enrolled in Korea’s National Health Insurance (NHIS) are generally covered for medically necessary consultations and tests, while elective or aesthetic treatments are not. Read more about health insurance for foreigners at Korean clinics, or ask for an itemized receipt and English diagnosis for travel insurance claims.

Frequently asked questions

Can cycling cause genital numbness?

Yes. Long rides can compress the pudendal nerve and blood vessels. Numbness usually improves with breaks, a different saddle and better fit, but persistent symptoms should be checked.

Can antidepressants cause genital numbness?

Some antidepressants, especially SSRIs and SNRIs, can reduce genital sensation and make orgasm harder. Talk to your prescribing doctor before making any change.

Is numbness after childbirth normal?

Temporary changes in sensation are common after vaginal birth, particularly with stitches or a long second stage. Most improve over months; if not, a pelvic floor assessment can help.

Does menopause cause numbness?

Lower estrogen can thin the tissue and reduce blood flow and arousal, which some women feel as reduced sensation. Local treatment often helps.

Which doctor should I see in Seoul?

A gynecologist is a good starting point. If a spinal or nerve cause is suspected, you will be referred to a neurologist or other specialist.
