Hymenoplasty is a minor surgery that brings together the remnants of the hymen at the vaginal opening with fine dissolvable stitches. It usually takes 30–60 minutes under local anesthesia, with same-day discharge. It cannot reliably cause bleeding at intercourse, and no examination can prove virginity. The decision is personal, and consultation is private and non-judgmental.

What is the hymen, and what does hymenoplasty do?
The hymen is a thin, flexible ring of tissue at the vaginal opening. Its shape varies a great deal from woman to woman, and it can stretch or tear through exercise, tampon use, medical examinations, intercourse or for no known reason. Many women never bleed the first time they have intercourse.
Hymenoplasty(hymen repair) gently reapproximates the remaining hymenal tissue so the opening is narrower. It is a reconstructive procedure of the vulvar area and does not change the vagina itself.
What can hymenoplasty achieve — and what can it not?
| Hymenoplasty can | Hymenoplasty cannot |
|---|---|
| Narrow the vaginal opening by rejoining hymen remnants | Ensure bleeding or a particular sensation at intercourse |
| Restore a ring-like appearance of the tissue | Be detected or "proven" by any medical test |
| Be done privately as a short outpatient procedure | Undo the emotional effects of past experiences on its own |
The WHO and other health bodies state that "virginity testing" has no scientific basis. Our doctors can explain these facts clearly so that you can make your own informed decision.
- Concern about privacy and being judged
- Uncertainty about what the surgery really does
- Anxiety about timing before an important date
- A confidential consultation in English
- Clear facts about what repair can and cannot do
- A timing plan that allows full healing
- Written aftercare and a follow-up check
Who asks about hymenoplasty?
Women come for many personal, cultural or emotional reasons, and every reason is treated with respect and confidentiality. Some come after an injury; some after sexual assault. If you have experienced assault or are being pressured by anyone, you deserve support: you can talk to the doctor privately, and in Korea you can call the women's emergency hotline 1366, which offers help in several languages.
Before surgery, an examination checks for infection. If you have any symptoms, testing such as an STD test can be done confidentially at the same visit.
Hymenoplasty at Yoonho, step by step
- Private consultation in English You can come alone. Your situation and wishes are discussed confidentially.
- Examination A gentle examination assesses the remaining tissue and checks for infection.
- Timing and estimate Surgery is usually planned about 1–2 months before an important date, avoiding your period. A written estimate is provided.
- Procedure Under local anesthesia (sedation is optional), the edges of the hymen remnants are freshened and joined with fine dissolvable stitches in about 30–60 minutes.
- Recovery You rest for a short time and go home the same day with written aftercare.
- Check-up A follow-up visit confirms healing; this can be scheduled around travel.
Recovery and risks
- Day 0–3 Mild soreness and light spotting are common. Use pads, not tampons.
- Week 1 Most daily activities and desk work are fine. Avoid cycling, horse riding and strenuous exercise.
- Week 2–4 Stitches dissolve. Avoid tampons, intercourse and swimming.
- Week 4–6 Healing is usually complete.
Risks include bleeding, infection, pain, and the repair partly or fully separating — the delicate tissue does not always heal as planned. Exercise and tampons before healing increase this risk.
Cost and confidentiality
The cost depends on the technique and anesthesia; a written estimate is given after consultation. Hymenoplasty is elective and is not covered by National Health Insurance — see health insurance for foreigners.
At Yoonho Women's Hospital in Apgujeong, Seoul, the procedure is performed by Dr. Joonho Cho, an OB-GYN specialist in intimate reconstructive gynecology. Medical records are confidential under Korean privacy law. Other options within cosmetic gynecology can also be discussed.

Frequently asked questions
Will I bleed after hymenoplasty?
No one can promise this. Many women with an intact hymen do not bleed at first intercourse, and the same is true after repair.
Can a doctor tell that I had hymenoplasty?
When healed, the repair is usually not obvious, but no one can promise how it will look on examination. Medically, no test can prove virginity in any case.
How far in advance should I have the surgery?
Usually about 1–2 months before the date that matters to you, so the tissue can heal fully. Talk to the doctor about your timeline.
Can I come alone and keep this private?
Yes. You can attend alone, the consultation is private, and your records are kept confidential.
Can I fly home after the procedure?
Most women can fly within a few days. If possible, plan a check-up before leaving Seoul and avoid heavy lifting and long periods of sitting without movement.
